Vendor/Manufacturing Member Spotlight
Founded in 1987 as Strickland Refining, Inc., Maguire Refining has long stood for excellence, integrity, honesty and a commitment to exceptional customer service. Owner and president, John Maguire, assumed full leadership when he purchased the company in 1993.
His son, Phillip, is now the General Manager and they employ about a dozen full-time employees in a 7300 square foot building. John often refers to his gold refinery as a place we “play with fire”. Along with the fire, they also have a state of the art Chem Lab. Maguire Refining, Inc. specializes in gold, platinum, palladium and silver refining for the jewelry and dental industries, as well as gemstone recovery for jewelers. Their mission is to provide prompt, precise returns and to complete all services in an environmentally sound manner giving customers peace of mind. Son-in-law Tom Kane has joined the business and having family work in the business offers them a chance to solve problems with shifting changes in the industry.
One of the biggest challenges the company faces is the digital age which continually decreases the use of scrap gold not only in the jewelry industry, but also in the dentistry industry. The change is dynamic and can be problematic and always needs to be addressed. Maguire Refining participates in the Iowa Jewelers Association shows and the Midwest Jewelers Association events.
When not playing with chemicals and fire, John loves to swim and swims with a masters group. He competes regularly in meets and open water swimming. In 2013 he swam from Alcatraz in San Francisco Bay with about 840 swimmers and came in in 30 minutes, 1 second – a mere 1.6 mile swim! In his spare time, John is an active board member of the Midwest Jewelers Association, he cooks for “Loaves and Fishes”, Catholic Charities, and Dorothy Day Organization. He and his son, Phillip, are avid hunters with a focus on bird hunting.
